The History of Hilton Head South Carolina
Hilton Head South Carolina has a rich and deep history, heralding back to the new world that Columbus discovered in 1492. Shortly after Columbus discovered the Americas the Spanish sailed the Carolina coast in the early 1500’s, but left little signs of their presence.
In 1562 a Frenchman by the name of Jean Ribaut claimed the land of Hilton Head South Carolina for the French and established Paris island. Which is now the home of the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
Not long thereafter, 1629 to be exact, the English arrived at Hilton Head South Carolina and claimed the territory between Florida and Virginia. King Charles 1 named this land after himself, the Carolinas. In 1663 a man by the name of Capt. William Hilton was sent to explore this land, and it is his name that Hilton Head South Carolina bears in his honor.
Hilton Head South Carolina continued to grow through the years as men such as John Barnwell, who started a 500-acre plantation on what is now called the Hilton Head Plantation, established plantations.
After the Revolutionary War cotton became the main crop for Hilton Head South Carolina, with nearly 26 plantations populating the island. However, the prosperity of the plantations ended abruptly with the onset of the Civil War. One of the first ports blocked was Port Royal Sound at the north end of Hilton Head South Carolina. This led to a quick surrender of the Rebel troops and an end to the lucrative plantations.
In the early 1950’s two men by the names of Gen. Joseph Fraser and Fred C. Hack began to purchase thousands of acres of Hilton Head South Carolina for timber. Joseph Fraser’s son, Charles, later saw the potential for Hilton Head South Carolina to become a resort and began to pursue this dream.
In 1957 Charles Fraser envisioned a bridge that could connect the north and south ends of Hilton Head South Carolina. This became a reality in 1995 when the Cross Island Parkway was completed, successfully connecting the north and south portions of Hilton Head South Carolina.
